M.Sc. Business Analytics & Econometrics
On this page, we present the courses we offer in our Master study program "Business Analytics & Econometrics". If you study in another program, you may also be able to elect some of these courses, please refer to this page or your module catalogue for more information.
The Field of Study
Data analytics, digital innovation and big data are crucial developments for the upcoming challenges in all business and economic areas. This programme offers a unique blend of traditional analytics (e.g. statistics, econometrics, optimisation, simulation) and modern analytical approaches (e.g. machine learning and artificial intelligence using R and Python) and merges these approaches with the teaching of groundbreaking knowledge in the areas of economics, management, and entrepreneurship.
This programme provides you with:
- Fundamental analytics and technology skills
- Groundbreaking knowledge and the mindset for a successful career in data analytics for business and economics
- Vital skills for starting and managing a business in the digital age and resolving complex issues in today’s organisations
- An ability to gather, manage and analyse (big) data as well as to visualise, present and use insights gained from the data
Course Overview and Recommended Study Plan
In the first and second term, the recommended study plan is the same for all students. Afterwards, you can select either the Business Analytics Track or the Econometrics Track.
Electives
In the electives, you can select two courses from the broad range of offerings from the faculty.
The Cologne Institute for Information Systems (CIIS) also offers some courses as electives:
- Summer Term:
- Advanced Analytics Applications [SM Information Systems I]
- Artificial Intelligence and Information Management [SM Information Systems III]
- Emerging Electronic Business [SM Information Systems II]
- Metaverse Technologies and Business Models [SM Information Systems III]
- Winter Term:
- Applied Mathematical Optimization [SM Information Systems III]
- Case Project Digital Transformation [SM Information Systems I]
- Digital Design [SM Information Systems II]
- Decision Making under Uncertainty [SM Information Systems II]
- Sustainable Digital Innovation Lab [SM Information Systems I]
Please note that you cannot elect two courses from the same module (e.g., not two courses from SM Information Systems I).
For information on the electives offered by other departments of our faculty, please check the module catalogue, KLIPS and their websites for details.
Studies Abroad Option
We encourage students to spend one term at a university abroad. The term abroad is usually the third term. In that case, you take your seminar (SM Seminar Data Analytics for Business or SM Seminar in Statistics and Econometrics). You skip the three specilization modules as well as Electives 1 and 2, instead you can get your courses from your foreign university accredited.
